27th ANNUAL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
October 1 - November 2, 2021
In 1994 a group of Sherman Heights residents, a predominantly Mexican American community and one of San Diego’s most historic neighborhoods, requested space to create altars for Día de los Muertos.
For 27 years the Sherman Heights Community Center has celebrated this tradition to embrace, honor, and respect the culture and traditions of residents as well as cultivating appreciation for Latino culture. The authentic programming is the hub of arts and culture in the San Diego community attracting more than 8,000 visitors.
The global pandemic has exacerbated the need for essential services and cultural programming that uplifts and connects us all. It has also made it increasingly difficult for non-profit organizations to secure much needed funding. Please support our ability to continue to provide free services, cultural programming and educational resources through a charitable contribution. Your generosity makes all the difference in our ability to continue to serve the community. We are grateful and thank you for your generosity.
Calaveritas & Diablitos
In 2020, we launch the “Calaveritas y Diablitos” activity guide. “Calaveritas y Diablitos” is a fun and informative resource for families, educators and the general public interested in learning more about Día de los Muertos from a historical, educational, and craft-based perspective. The guide includes a concise explanation of the tradition’s mesoamerican history and how it is observed in the US, a description of a Día de los Muertos altar, several family-friendly activities, and additional resources for further learning and enjoyment.
