English classes prepare students to be fully engaged with their communities. Families benefit when students become proficient in English, enabling them to participate in educational and social lives. Language acquisition increases opportunities for education, employment and financial stability for participants.
Course Description
ESL Beginning - Students with limited understanding of English develop listening comprehension, reading, speaking and simple conversation skills needed to function in day-to-day adult situations.
ESL Advanced Beginning/Intermediate - The emphasis is on developing greater fluency and oral communication as well as reading and writing skills. The focus also includes listening, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary development.
ESL Conversation - Expand oral language skills and refine reading and writing skills. The emphasis is on conversation.
Teachers
Jeanna Gapp has taught Elementary School for 20 years with training in English as a Second Language. Jeanna has been teaching English to adult students at Sherman Heights Community Center (SHCC) for 11 years. She loves teaching and is passionate about helping her students learn English. Her class provides a safe environment to allow students to feel comfortable. Jeanna likes making her lessons as practical, hands-on and interactive as possible.
David Gapp has taught ESL at SHCC for 11 years, assisting Jeanna or having his own class depending on the Class Levels and English ability of the students. He is fluent in Portuguese, and went to City College earning an Associates Degree in Spanish in 2019. He enjoys teaching English Conversation classes to his students.
